May 25, 2008 Routerbot (Robot Built From WRT54GL Router) Gets Web Interface

Routerbot Web InterfaceAfter a hard day of development and testing I’m proud to announce Web interface for routerbot :) It greately facilitates roubot teleoperating. With this interface you have to use telnet and ssh no more. Instead, you just click on colorful arrows on a webpage and see the robot doing exactly what you clicked. Another interesting feature is that the web interface simplified programming.

All buttons you click are automatically added to the program listing, so you can just press “Run” and the routerbot will repeat exactly what you just told it to do. Also you can save your programs in 5 different files and load them later (even after reboot). With this feature routerbot turned into a really nice toy for kids.

Here is one game with the routerbot. We had a competition at home about the best program for mauevering among 0.5l bottles. For this game you put dozen of bottles on the floor to form a series of gates. Then you write a program for the routerbot to get from point A to point B thru all the gates. After programming the routerbot you put it in the same staring position and run the program. The one who wrote the fatest program wins.

The new firmware for the routerbot that includes the web interface will be available for download a bit later.

The screenshot of the web interface is shown below. The left side of the interface with arrows controls the routerbot movement. The right side reflects the field of view and allows you to choose what the router should be looking at. The current camera position is highlighted with red color. The bottom part allows writing simple programs. All commands you issue using this web interface are also being recordered in the textarea. After you complete the code you can either save it for the future or run immediately as many times as you want.

    Hi from Russia!
    Is something new for routerbot?
I want to build my own bot ;-)
And I want to use this servocontroller http://robozone.su/mrc28/ for my bot, so i wiil need your help in programming.
I also found this article http://duff.dk/wrt54gs/ maybe it helps your routerbot say something like “WALL-E” (great film IMHO) ;-)

    Hi Vlad,

Nothing new so far. Thanks for the links. I was working with Covoxes a long time ago (12 years ago back in school) and the music capabilities of this technology is really amazing. Unfortunately the speech quality is really poor. Yes, it can say WALL-E, but just the way WALL-E pronounces it, i.e. nothing close to human speech.

The controller link you sent doesn’t look like SSC-32 I have, it could be some alternative version with similar capabilities. I don’t know much about programming that particular model, but if it uses the same approach as the original SSC-32 it won’t be difficult use it.

    Good luck,
    Andrey

Hi Andrey! You are on MAKE blog now!!!!

    Vlad,

(Let me answer in English to keep the same language for the entire project. I know your English is great so that should not be a problem)

I build the routerbot in Feb08 and since then got only a little feedback. That made me pretty much doubtful about the usefulness of the project. So I stopped development for awhile. Click storm I’ve got last week made me believe the project is interesting for others, so I plan to continue development. I’m currently working on the next gen version of the routerbot that will look not as funny(junky), but more impressive.

    Andrey

    Thanks for answer Andrey.
First of all i’ll try to make SD mod for my router.
Please put all needed for this in your future firmware for routerbot.
